# Myth #3: “IoT Requires Complex Solutions to Be Effective”

For many companies and businesses, the road toward implementing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions has been tortuous and, in most cases, unsuccessful.

One of the main reasons why businesses don’t get the results they want when they implement this type of technology is their insistence on trying to measure and control all of the data they generate with IoT.   
This results in a huge amount of data to be analyzed, including information that isn’t necessarily relevant or important to their operations. 

A flower grower, for example, can measure and monitor 500 variables – the level of humidity in the air and soil, temperature, light, chlorophyll, etc. – but all are not necessarily essential to the business’s operation.  Of them all, perhaps only five have a truly important impact.

For IoT to have positive results, therefore, it must focus on the variables that have a real influence based on a company’s experience, operation and goals.  The right solution may be more or less complex according to the needs of the organization. 

Successful implementation of an IoT solution is intrinsically linked to the participation of employees who are familiar with and understand how the company operates.  They are the ones who should decide which information is relevant and merits monitoring, without discarding the possibility of uncovering important data that, with the right analysis, could help identify other factors that affect productivity.

Those of us in the industry and who develop IoT solutions do not have the same knowledge or experience of an agricultural business, to take just one example, as a person active in this sector.  We can suggest and implement ideas according to what we believe to be important and what we have learned from other clients, but the real experts in how a business runs are those who are closely involved in its operations. 

The fact is that businesses that want to implement IoT solutions don’t necessarily have to measure large amounts of data.  It’s important to start with the basics; sometimes, all that’s needed are trends and correlations for two or three indices that can identify changes in productivity that have consequences for a company’s operations.   
IoT solutions have a 90% probability of yielding favorable results if companies focus their objectives and select the right rubrics to analyze.  If they choose a partner to assist them, it should be someone with the experience to guide them in the process.
